PERSONAL STATEMENT
Baseball and sport as a whole has been a major part of my life and personal development. As a student athlete I'm also looking forward to pursuing a career involving sports, such as sports management or sports psychology. When I'm on the field, whether its training or the game, baseball is all that matters. I'm a composed, self possessed player. I listen closely to coaching and strive for perfection.

During the past 3 years, Gabs has grown in stature as an individual in his own right to a coordinated athlete. Gabs progression from a young player to his current status of playing grade within the Sydney Winter and summer leagues has been due to hard work

In today’s world, it’s hard to find someone who looks and listens to what you’re talking about while looking directly at your face. Gabs is one of those rare people that will listen, learn and put into practice what you endeavour to educate him with. Gabs development hasn’t been by luck, it’s been his hard work and dedication to progression in his chosen talent. Do I believe Gabs will be successful in his desires? No doubt in mind he will succeed.

I was privileged to manage Gabs at last years World Youth Baseball tournament in Korea in which Gabs excelled in the field and with the bat without being intimidated in playing National teams from Japan, Korea, Germany, Mexico, Taiwan, U.S.A etc. Gabs hit over .500 for the tournament and took control in the outfield and on the bases.

I have a long background in baseball with over 40+ years playing and coaching. I have played minor league baseball for several years and represented my country playing baseball. Over the past 20 years I have been involved with coaching and development of baseball within Australia including a position with the Australian Baseball Federation as a development officer. I have also been a Manager and assistant coach for the N.S.W teams playing in the National Championships over the previous 11 years along with elite and developmental programs for the State. I am currently a Global Consultant for the Cincinnati Reds and previously with the Atlanta Braves with over 20 years scouting experience.

In finishing, I believe Gabs will succeed in baseball and academically which is due to his desire to succeed and be the best in everything he attempts. 2nd place for Gabs isn’t the position he desires in his life and with a chance to push his baseball

and schooling further, I feel he will thrive. Gabs leaves the field with a dirty uniform every time he steps on the field.

Recommendation: It is with pleasure that I offer this reference on behalf of Gabriel Mateu. Gabriel first came to my attention in the Summer State League competition of 2016/2017.He was playing for an opposition team in the U18’s division. We played each other about 5 times. Each time Gabs proved to be a thorn in our side in both offence and defence. Apart from his playing ability, what made him standout was his calm demeanour and respect for the game. There are quite a few talented kids in this league, but his humility and clinical approach lifted him up a notch.

I was excited when he arrived for tryouts at UNSW trials this winter season. This is a grade competition, and sometimes a big step from junior baseball. Well Gabs has handled it ease. Put into the 3rd grade team for the first game of the season, it was obvious that his skill sets and knowledge would progress him quickly. His second game of the season as a 2nd grade starter solidified his role in this side. He has played there all season and has become a marquee player at this level. He has also been a vital part of our 1st grade wins this season as both a bench player, and when we are a short, a starter. The step up from U18’s player to 1st grade starter is a massive leap. We thought carefully about this decision and we decided that he was up for the challenge, and he didn’t disappoint.

Gabs has a great work ethic when it comes to training, continually trying to challenge and improve himself. He takes on board all the instructions given to him and works diligently to apply them at training and in game situations. His focus and attitude during the game is second to none. He’s a gamer who doesn’t quit until it’s over.

In closing, I can wholeheartedly recommend him to any future coach or organisation, and I know he will be an asset to any college that accepts him.

Recommendation: Gabs is a good athlete with top end speed and plenty of upside once he adds some more muscle. His work ethic is definitely a strength and hes already lifting with a baseball specific S&C coach to take advantage of his frame. Gabs can play any outfield position and is capable of tracking down balls in the OF. He has a compact swing that is short to the ball with no wasted movement. Gabs is a dedicated, respectful, competitive and hard working individual. He has consistently improved over the time i have been coaching him and has shown a willingness to do what is asked of him throughout the process. Whether it be playing multiple positions or hitting in various spots in the lineup he is always willing to adapt to what the team needed him to do.
